Learning from the Past

Gracie Kenon, Gail Radcliff, Carolyn Roberts, and Lala Snead

Gracie Kenon, Gail Radcliff, Carolyn Roberts, and Lala Snead taught together at Anacostia High School in Washington, DC. Their individual life stories are entwined with their collective experiences. They each served in the position of mathematics department chair and worked together to redesign curriculum against the grain of the school district mandated curriculum. The Anacostia Four were colleagues for decades and stood up for each other in the face of adversity from administrators. They remain close friends in retirement and for that reason requested to be interviewed together. Among the four women, they have taught mathematics for a range of 23 years - 42 years.
