Learning from the Past
Debbie McDonald
Debbie McDonald’s career began in New Jersey as a music teacher for students in grades K-8. When she relocated to the Atlanta region in 1980, she only taught high school mathematics: pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Her pedagogical practice featured hands-on methods and authentic learning tasks so that her students could make connections between mathematics and their everyday life experiences as well as national current events. Ms. McDonald was surprised when Chris Bridges, known as the rapper Ludacris, recognized her on national television as one of his favorite teachers. Currently, she teaches at a credit recovery charter school for students from high school freshmen through 21 years of age.
