Learning from the Past

Clementine White

Clementine White began her career as a mathematics teacher during the first year federal law mandated the busing of Black students to predominantly white schools in Louisville, Kentucky. For eight years, she taught high school mathematics. The few Black students assigned to the school could only take a general studies mathematics class and every white student was enrolled in Geometry. When Mrs. White’s request to fulfill her mission of teaching Black students in Louisville was denied, she sought employment in the Atlanta, Georgia metro area. As the coordinator of the Comprehensive Math and Science Program, Mrs. White created before- and after-school as well as summer courses providing Black students in high school with a solid understanding of foundational courses. Mrs. White retired after 33 ½ years of teaching mathematics.
